Berlin Never Finishes

A tall construction crane towers above a bent street fixture, the metal arm arcing overhead as if bowing before the city's relentless forward motion. It's an accidental gesture — reverent, almost ceremonial — caught in a single frame on a Berlin street.

There's a saying about this city: Berlin is always becoming, it never is. It's said with a smirk, but it carries real weight. Over 80% of the city was destroyed in World War II. Then came four decades of division, two separate infrastructures, two different visions of what a city should be — and then, reunification. The cranes never really left.

What looks like disruption is actually continuity. Berlin has been rebuilding itself for generations, and somehow that process has become part of its identity — raw, unfinished, and completely alive. This photograph finds the poetry in that, doing what Berlin has always done.
