Gay Pride, Cardiff

Shot in Bute Park — the sweeping grounds that wrap around Cardiff Castle, a site whose medieval origins could scarcely have imagined the scene unfolding centuries later. That improbable distance between then and now is part of what makes the image resonate. In the foreground: two Pride celebrants, joyful and unguarded, their recognition of the camera producing the kind of smile that is entirely unselfconscious. Whether the t-shirt is cheeky provocation or simple truth in advertising, I never did find out. Either way, it doesn't matter. The joy is the point.
