A Line That Defined and Divided
Along Bernauer Strasse, where the Berlin Wall once split a city in two, two walls now stand in quiet confrontation. A surviving section of the original Wall faces a newer structure of red brick — part memorial, part monument to reunification. Neither yields to the other.
There's something unresolved about the composition, and that feels right. The Wall's history doesn't resolve neatly either. It divided families, neighborhoods, and a nation for nearly three decades. The red brick that replaced it doesn't erase that — it marks it. Together, the two walls hold the tension between what was and what came after, between the scar and the attempt to acknowledge it.
This photograph was made at the Berlin Wall Memorial on Bernauer Strasse, one of the most complete preserved sections of the border strip. It's a place where the geometry of division is still legible in the landscape.
